Thanks, Jan. There is intelligent life out there. Just not in Washington.

. Would love you to read my “Nashua: How Ronald Reagan led us to Donald Trump.” I wrote about it on my Substack again the other day. I think we’re simpatico on this.

Barbara is terrific and it was great you took a few minutes to share her work.

What a heartening event! In your paragraph about misinformation vs. disinformation should the second sentence be defining misinformation?

Thanks a million, Polly. Fixed that typo. I should never post that late at night but should always wait until the morning!

This is off topic but I was just reviewing my writing about my time with my mom toward the end of her life that will be published in the next few months and ran across this passage where we discussed a biography of Princess Margaret that I was reading at the time:

“Before leaving I asked Mom what she recalled about the Queen’s younger sister Princess Margaret. I am reading a fantastical, dishy new biography of her. ‘Chain-smoking alcoholic,’ Mom summarized. That is what I am gathering as I make my way through the book and its kaleidoscopic collection of anecdotes, quotes, and imaginings.

Mom also remembered how she was not allowed to marry a divorced Air Force captain. He was already the father of two children and 18 years older than she. ‘Oh, really?’ Mom said. "‘Just as well.’”

My mom was not much of a reader but she could have a pithy take on things here and there. The biography was “Nine-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret” by Craig Brown. I remember enjoying it and the author’s approach to his subject.

A week or two ago the NYT Magazine had an article on the enduring appeal of biography. I thought that the author was overthinking things, trying to solve a mystery that doesn’t exist.

Glad your writing about your mother is moving forward, and thanks for the tip on that article on biography. My frustrations with the NYT are such that I skip a lot and always appreciate hearing about something I shouldn’t miss.

Well, I think you could miss the article on biography. Like so many NYT Magazine articles now, it’s just a lot of words about . . . . what, exactly? So much in the Magazine is not news anymore. I don’t even know how to describe what’s in there now except to say that I am often disappointed.
