I’ve been using Sound ID since it was launched, and I can usually identify all of the birds around my home in rural Southeast Georgia. Love it!

Glad to know of an alternative to Merlin. We must get some of the same birds here in Alabama. Do you have the robins passing through in in spring and fall? Among my favorites: the stately walk of the egrets on beach.

Jan, I was on my phone and in a rush. Sound ID is what the function was originally called within the Merlin app. :)

Yes! We do see some robins. It's usually in February around here. We live in the country and have several ponds, so it's a great place for birding. However, we lost many trees from Hurricane Helene, and it is definitely impacting the number of birds we usually see and hear.

All of a sudden birds seem to be flocking into my life, so to speak - the other day I read an interview with author Jennifer Ackerman about her books on birds, yesterday my daughter discovered a cardinal's nest in a bush by our back door, and now this essay! Of all the birds I hear where we live, I most appreciate the cooing of the doves - I finding it very soothing, a coo indeed.

Those coos really are soothing, and I love that young can hear them anywhere from New York City to my small town a thousand miles from it.
